About WVASF:
The War on Poverty began when President Lyndon Johnson presented Congress with the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. Nearly three decades later, Congress replaced Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF. The new law changed welfare. It provides educational and training assistance and places time limits on families receiving government assistance. In West Virginia, the TANF program is known as West Virginia Works.
Even with these reforms, the War on Poverty is still being fought by thousands of West Virginia children and families. The West Virginia Welfare Reform Coalition was created to put the issue of conquering poverty back on the government and community agenda. This is done by taking action in the areas of research, education, advocacy and coalition building.
